School IP Addresses

Internet Protocol (IP) Address: An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.  An IP address serves two principal functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing. (Wikipedia)

DHCP vs Static
  • DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Authorized devices on the network receives an address automatically. The IP address of the device may change when it is restarted or reconnected to the network at a later time.
  • Static IP - Fixed IP address assigned by school - doesn’t change when the device restarts. Each VLAN has its own set of unique IP addresses. Only the following VLANs have IP addresses which the schools can statically assign: VLAN130 (Faculty Wired), VLAN140 (Student Wired), and VLAN170 (Servers). The wireless network VLANs do not have static addresses in their address pools.
Configuring Static Addresses

When configuring a client device with a static address you should will need to configure the following:
1. IP Address - example: 10.x.x.45
2. Network Gateway - example: 10.x.x.1
3. Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
4. DNS (Domain Name Server) - example: 165.248.1.219

Refer to your network documentation binder for IP addresses which were assigned to your school for the VLAN the device will connect to.  Remember not to configure devices with DHCP addresses.
