Virtual Networks (VLANs)

Virtual Networks (VLANs) VLANs: The school's network is segmented into separate virtual networks in order to separate traffic, provide quality of server, and to enhance security.  Switch ports are specifically configured for a particular VLAN.

VLANs include the following:

Faculty

VLAN130: Faculty wired
VLAN230: Faculty wireless

Student

VLAN140: student wired network
VLAN240: Student wireless network

Voice

VLAN110 - Ports configured for the faculty and student wired VLANs are also configured with the voice VLAN, enabling both IP phones, computer, and printers to work on those ports.

Management

VLAN100 - generally reserved for network switches.

Server

VLAN170

Wireless Management

VLAN201

Key takeaways

1. Each VLAN is associated with an IP address range that is either assigned statically or dynamically.

2. A device that is connected to a port that is configured for a device on a different VLAN will not function properly.  For example a computer connected to a port configured for an wireless access point will not be able get to the internet.  An access point connected to a computer or voice port will appear to be operating correctly (solid blue or green light on the LED indicator) but will not be able to provide clients with an network connection.

3. The faculty and student wired networks are configured with range of dynamic and static ip addressees.  Please insure not to assign a device with an address in the dynamic range.
